Nature in the picture – A series of articles by Peter Michael Hornung
Politiken (June 21, 2020): Excerpt from Jane Balsgaard: "The Church Boat"
IT LOOKS LIKE PRIMITIVE TOOLS FROM DISTANT CIVILIZATIONS. BUT IT IS ART
Art. If an artist wants to show his love for nature – or draw our attention to it – it can be done by the artist depicting this nature. This has been done countless times throughout history by at least as many different painters, graphic artists, draftsmen, photographers, etc. But it can also be done in a different and more direct way by the artist using nature itself as material.
The visual artist Jane Balsgaard (born 1939) has done this in her free poetic installations and constructions, and in the “Church Ship” seen here. It couldn’t be more organic. The material is most often wood and paper, which the artist herself has created with the intention of using it in an artistic process. She has collected the branches and twigs from nature. And the pulp from which she makes the paper comes from plants that she has found at Roskilde Fjord. When the paper has dried, she stretches it between an elaborate weave of willow twigs and branches.
